Haiku by Dog: when forging new paths / it's best to be the one / with the longest legsToday’s haiku is by Jasper.

The photo is from a previous year, when we actually had a winter. And snow. It’s why we bought a second snow blower, an electric one for our deck. Because shoveling can get old. Particularly when your back is… well… old.

Or maybe that’s why this has been a snow-deprived winter. Maybe there’s no such thing as climate change, and the only reason we had an incredibly mild winter and are now enjoying a spectacularly early spring is because we bought that snow blower. Two years and we’ve used it exactly three times — and once was just so Brian could show me how to work it.

The dogs had a little bit of snow this year, never deep enough to play follow the leader with Jasper, but enough to romp and play in. We didn’t get a chance to build a snow dog this year, either. Or a snow cat.

And maybe I’m tempting fate, writing about our early spring nearly a month before its official start. Last time I declared a March snowfall the last of the season, Mother Nature responded to my rude comment with a “Oh you thought winter was over, did you?” snowstorm on the first day of spring. I had to write her an apology.

I do love snow, but I’m happy when spring comes.

Even if it means the beginning of Mud Paw Season.

What do you think is your pet’s favorite season?
